A Great Collection Of Maps Moved To Its First Every Physical Home
Beginning in 1990s, David Rumsey who is known to be a map collector, has made a digital copy of each of his collections in order to be shared online for free. His collection consists of thousands of historical maps. This is the reason why his website is considered as the best source for someone who is into cartography. His main collection is focused on maps from the 1800s and 1900s but there are also other forms that can be found that falls under the category cartographic – century maps from 1900 that are made by children, aeronautical charts, celestial globes, over 2,000 pictorial maps, an atlas that was made for the blind back in 1837, constellations dating back in the 1700s, timelines and World’s Fair guides.
Back in April of this year, a David Rumsey Map Center was opened by the Stanford University which is located in the Green Library. The center will be the first location which will be opened to the public in order to view the 150,000 collection of maps. It can be remembered that Rumsey decided to donate his collection in 2009.
According to the head and curator of what is now the David Rumsey Map Center, G. Salim Mohammed, the center will not only hold the physical maps but the digital copies as well which renders the place a haven for the scholars who wanted to access both modes. It was a significant fact that Rumsey did not only donate the physical maps he had but their digital copies as well. Even before other libraries and museums have decided to adapt digitization, Rumsey is already working on ways to create images that are high-resolution that can be posted online. One of his efforts is developing the Luna Imaging which is now a popular too used for display.
The center houses other collections from Glen McLaughlin, Banner Earth Sciences Library and Map Collections as well as the existing over 10,000 maps that are already in the possession of Stanford Libraries. Up to his day, map illustration still holds a very special place no matter the form – it can be digital or physical maps.
